Sennheiser HSP 4-3 Professional Cardioid Condenser Headworn Microphone (Beige)

The Sennheiser HSP 4-3 is a premium, reference-grade headworn condenser microphone designed for high-end professional stage performances, broadcast studios, houses of worship, and corporate presentations. Featuring a high-performance cardioid polar pattern, it provides exceptional off-axis rejection and maximum gain-before-feedback, making it the ideal choice for noisy stages or environments with high ambient volume levels.

The "-3" designation indicates its factory finish in an unobtrusive, stage-ready Beige skin-tone. This specific variant typically comes configured with a 3.5 mm locking mini-jack connector, engineered for direct compatibility with Sennheiser's evolution wireless bodypack transmitters (such as the EW-D, EW-DX, and older G3/G4 series).

Key Acoustic and Mechanical Attributes

  • Premium MKE Platinum Condenser Capsule: Powered by a permanently polarized capsule derivative of Sennheiser's legendary MKE platinum tier. It delivers high speech intelligibility, excellent transient response, and a smooth, balanced frequency curve extending from 40 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

  • Patented Moisture-Resistant Umbrella Diaphragm: Built with a specialized acoustic element protection shroud. This unique design sheds sweat and bodily moisture away from the capsule face, preventing sudden capsule shorting, sputtering, or audio dropouts during long, high-energy stage performances.

  • Fully Modular and Interchangeable Architecture: Every primary component of the headset can be decoupled and replaced individually. The microphone boom, neckband frame, and connection cable can all be detached, swapped, or interchanged with omnidirectional elements (such as the HSP 2 boom) to adapt to different production demands.

  • Adjustable Twist-Proof Boom Alignment: The slim 2.0 mm diameter microphone boom can be positioned on either the left or right side of the headband. It features an adjustable length track and a flexible gooseneck front section for millimeter-precise capsule placement near the corner of the mouth.

Field Operation and Placement Advice

Precise Capsule Positioning for Feedback Control: To take full advantage of the cardioid capsule's directional rejection, place the microphone capsule exactly at the corner of the user's mouth, keeping a distance of roughly 1 to 2 centimeters from the skin. Never position a directional cardioid capsule directly in front of the mouth or lips. Doing so will cause severe vocal plosive popping ($p$, $b$ sounds) and trap heavy breath noise, causing the wireless transmitter input stage to clip.

Wired Conversion Utility: If your production needs change and you want to convert this wireless headmic into a standard hardwired microphone running straight into an audio console, do not modify the cable. Instead, couple the 3.5 mm locking connector directly into a Sennheiser MZA 900 P active phantom power adapter. This inline adapter will safely convert standard 48V studio phantom power down to the bias voltage needed by the headset capsule while converting the signal into a balanced male XLR output.

Very basic
Format: Paperback
The idea of the book is to be condensed and concise but there is too much information that should be expanded on that is not. The writers of this book seem to think students using the book have a strong pediatric background but for FNPs that isn’t always the case. I found myself having to do research outside of the book to understand the chapters. Also there were many typos and mislabeled diagrams.
