Nitrogen-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs) are a composite material formed by introducing nitrogen atoms into multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). This doping can significantly alter the physical and chemical properties of carbon nanotubes, giving them unique properties and application potential. Each nitrogen atom has one more electron than the carbon atom, and when the nitrogen atom replaces the carbon atom in the MWCNTs, N-type semiconductors are theoretically formed, thereby changing the electrical conductivity of the MWCNTs.
The tunneling conductivity and electron transport properties of nitrogen-doped MWCNTs are generally better than those of undoped MWCNTs.
Nitrogen doping can also increase the state density on the Fermi surface of MWCNTs, and increase the possibility of electrons entering the conduction band from the valence band, which is conducive to the improvement of field emission performance. Nitrogen doping improved the surface activity of MWCNTs, making them show higher catalytic activity and selectivity in some chemical reactions.
The introduction of nitrogen atoms may also change the way MWCNTs interact with other molecules, broadening their applications.
