Overview

The Bug Eye Squeaker Catfish is a compact and uniquely shaped Synodontis species, instantly recognizable by its deep, rounded body and prominent, expressive eyes. Small, hardy, and full of quirky personality, it’s a favorite among African oddball enthusiasts and catfish collectors.

Origin

Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, typically found in slow-moving, shaded waters with plenty of submerged structure.

Feeding

Omnivorous and easy to feed:

  • Sinking catfish pellets
  • Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis
  • Occasional live foods
  • Vegetables like blanched zucchini or cucumber

They are excellent scavengers but still require a consistent diet.

Tank Mates

Peaceful with similarly sized community fish:

  • African tetras
  • Rainbowfish
  • Peaceful cichlids (e.g., kribs, Congo River species)
  • Other Synodontis species

Avoid: Very small fish that may be mistaken for food and highly aggressive tank mates.

Aggression

Low. Generally peaceful, though may show mild territoriality toward other bottom dwellers, especially in smaller tanks.

Experience Level

Beginner to Intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for aquarists with basic experience in maintaining stable water conditions.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
  • pH: 6.5–7.6
  • Hardness: 5–20 dGH
  • Notes: Provide plenty of hiding spots using rocks, caves, and driftwood. Moderate flow and clean water help them thrive.

The Bug Eye Squeaker Catfish (Synodontis contractus) is a charming, uniquely shaped bottom dweller with a calm temperament—perfect for African community tanks and catfish enthusiasts.

Annoying sound but DOGGY TOY JOY!!
Pattern Name: Skunk
My 14 month old is squeaker OBSESSED, but she easily does surgery and defluffs. However this toy has been perfect. The sound when you shake is over the top and creates so much excitement. She loves to chase and chew this and play tug with this, and no tears from tug or points where she's tried to excise squeaker so far!

Great toy loved by 3 big dogs
Pattern Name: Skunk
We have a black lab and 2 grandpups (a Great Dane and a Cane Corso) that visit regularly. All 3 love this toy. All 3 destroy toys pretty quickly, sometimes within minutes. I have no idea what it is about this one, but they have not even remotely destroyed it except for major slobber damage from being so loved. I bought the first one months ago from TJ Maxx and then bought another on here thinking it could be a replacement when the first one got destroyed. The first one has yet to be destroyed. It sounds like there is a water bottle inside of it but it is some kind of coil thing. That being said, this toy can be very annoying to listen to, but we tolerate it for 3 very happy dogs.

Not for us, unfortunately.
Pattern Name: Chipmunk
Cute idea. We have doxies. Unfortunately, they ripped the apart in 5 minutes to get to the squeaker. I'm sure other breeds are more gentle with their toys. It would be a great toy for them.

Very durable
Pattern Name: Chipmunk
Our dog loves this "squeaky." He got it as a gift 11 months ago and I finally had to replace it because he almost had the head and tail chewed off -- took him about a year of chewing. I almost hated to throw the old one away because the squeakers still worked! Our dog is small -- about 22 lbs. -- but is a terrier mix and loves playing tug-of-war with this Zippy toy and he also loves shaking it like crazy. It's a great value compared to the toys I find in the local pet stores. Most of those "die" because he punctures them with his teeth so they no longer squeak. This one is well worth the price.
